I need your eyeballs

Oh, thank you so much for all the love on Addison's duvet cover. Each comment made me smile. You guys are all right!

I have started another patchwork project, and I need some help. I have been so inspired by the pattern for the pencil roll I made the kids that I wanted to make a quilt using the same idea. I was thinking long strips of all the colors used in that pattern. You start with black then fade to brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, gray, and white.

I really wanted to use long strips, but I did not have enough fabric in my stash. Really, the whole point of this project was to use what I already had, without buying more fabric. I decided to make blocks instead.

I am having trouble with the flow. I need your opinion. Keep in mind each block will be framed in white. First, I thought I would start at the top and snake down from side to side. Do you see what I mean? Let's call this one horizontal.

Then I thought maybe doing the same sort of thing, only going up and down. Let's call this one vertical.

I am just not seeing it. I thought it would flow a lot better. Maybe I should give up, and piece it randomly? Let's call this one random. So tell me, what do you think looks best.

Vertical, horizontal, or random.

This is going to be wonderful!!

And it could just be me,but I think it's the white square that is throwing it all off... I mean, if it's going to be sashed with white throughout, then... you'll still have the white in there.

Otherwise, I think the first one, horizontal, is my favorite. :)

i agree the white should just be left to the sashing. as far as what direction.. i am really not sure what I like best hehe
sorry not much help but I am sure it will look great when you are finished.

I'm thinking the same on the white - use it for the sashing only. And then I think either the horizontal or the random. This is going to be lovely when you are done.

i can take or leave the white square, but my vote is vertical! whatever you decide i think it will be awesome.

I like the random!

I like the vertical flow...I think it is easiest on the eyes. Looks great!

I really like the vertical, and I personally like the white square! I'm sure it will end up looking great any way that you do it though!

what about more blocks in each color (if you have them) and make long strips of color like you wanted.

would diagonal work?

good project!

Good for you using up scraps. I really like the Random one. Like you said, once they are framed in again with white, I don't think you can go wrong. Lovely.

I agree that I think the white square is out of place. Personally, and this is a very subjective thing, but I like the vertical order better. I think it flows better. Good luck!

I was going to say the same thing...the white seems to be throwing things off. My vote, otherwise, is for horizontal. Of course, without the white block you'd have an odd number...hmm. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I would randomly mix lights, darks and mediums. Lay them out then step back and squint at it, you'll see better what you need to move around. If your sashing is white then don't do a white block, it'll make a big obvious spot in the quilt. Work on contrasts and you'll be happier. You could do a small block in your sashing at the corners of the blocks - each a different colour used in your quilt - in your sashing to help tie it together. It;s great to use up scraps!

I say vertical but I'm no expert. The white square threw me off too but once I figured it out that it wasn't part of your duvet, I was able to not think it was a missing piece. Maybe that is what was affecting everyone else's eye with it? Either way, I can't wait to see it!

I like the random idea and I agree with everyone one the white square. I think that is what is throwing it off. Maybe the white could be smack dab in the middle? I'm sure that it will look great no matter what you do.

Very cool! I like vertical :) All options looked good though!

I guess I didn't think so at first, but I see what people mean about the white square. And I was totally feelin' it vertical! It's going to be awesome!

I like the random the best. I agree with the others about the white square. However, I also think the black square doesn't quite fit in there either. It's too dark and solid compared to the other prints.

The vertical is working better for me. But, I like random, too, if you perhaps reorder some of the similar colors and bold/small prints further away from each other? Does that make sense?

I've no doubt the end result will be beautiful, because you are meticulous in your work. Take a breath and allow yourself time to look at it, feel it and you'll piece it to perfection!

I love the vertical. There is something about the flow that is very calming on the eyes.

I'm going with vertical...I can't wait to see what this ends up looking like...I'm very into using up my stash these days.

Have you seen the paintbox quilt at oh fransson?

http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2008/10/finished-paintbox-quilt.html

A very similar idea, and maybe her finished product will help you with the layout.

She has hers anchored in each corner with the black, which really works for me.

I tend to think the white square is a problem here. It is just way too white.

I am drawn to vertical. I think it is a wonderful concept and the fabrics you chose look great in either order, but my eye like vertical. Good luck with your decision. Oh, and thank you for visiting my site and commenting. I am new to quilting and was drawn to your blog, and even more so when I realized that you live in Maine because I went to graduate school in Portland after living in Bangor. And I miss Maine.

katie, remember i am not a quilter, so take this with a grain of salt.

put the white square in the middle. pick the four darkest squares and use those as anchors on the corners. then fill in with the remaining, in whichever color pattern you see fit.

i wish i did quilt! you are such an inspiration!

It is looking great! I like Sheepish One's suggestion. Another suggestion would be to do a scrap swap with someone to get a wider variety of colours and tones, that way you don't have to buy more fabric!

Michelle said...

I kinda like random.

MacsMommy said...

I have to agree with sheepish one - I would do the darker corners, and work in - but I would leave out the white square.....you do such awesome work!! Can I place an order?!!? :o) (This is your aunt Susan by the way!)

Remove the white and black and separate the two blues, then any combination will work. Your stuff is always lovely.

I vote for horizontal! Love the newest duvet, so pretty.

It is all nice but I vote for random! :)

I vote vertical. There's something about it that flows.

What about if you work in a swirl? kinda like this... http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oblong_swirl.svg

I dunno... I'm not quilter, but this was my first thought when I saw the colours...

Vertical is good, but what about diagonal? Like:

Blk Br R
R O Y
O Grn P
Blu Gry W

Meagan said...

I think vertical flows best, I like how the darkest and lightest squares are on opposite corners. Maybe you could make a less all white square, like ivory or pale khaki, so the white isn't so white? I am thinking that once the sashing is on, there will be a visually blank spot where the white square is, it will be lost in the sashing...I can't wait to see it done!

Hilary said...

Hmm...I think I like the horizontal option best. It has a nice flow. But whatever you do, it's going to look great.

I would leave out the white and maybe the black. I like the random layout best. I know you will turn it into a beautiful piece of art!

At first I thought it was the black, but after looking at it again I second (or thirty-eighth) the thought that the white seems to be throwing it off a bit. I'm sure it's going to be lovely whatever you decide!

elliebelle said...

First of all, it will be wonderful when finished! I think I would go with Vertical. I like the way the white square kind of anchors the corner and then allows your eye to move easily throughout the rest of the quilt.

amandajean said...

i'd say to replace the white square with something darker and then add some white sashing to tie all the colors together. (i know, ugh, more sashing...) ;)

I just can't wait to see this!!!

Hey. The quilt is a lovely idea and I really like the combos. It will be beautiful. I wanted to ask - have you worn Surface much? In your spare time, if you get a chance, I would love to see it modeled in the jeans/t-shirt style. I am working on one myself and can not wait until it is completed!! I want to wear it now!

katrina lauren said...

I think it will be an interesting and pretty quilt when all done. I like the random layout the best and I too thought that the white square seemed to not fit in as well with the others. I thought that it might be neat to embroider in colour something onto the white square, like the name of the person the quilt is for or inspirational words...to make it a little less white! happy quilting and we can't wait to see it all finished...(which should be tomorrow knowing your speedy crafting ways!)

Vertical if you want to use all of the blocks. I do agree that the white block seems to throw off the flow. I like Dawnie's suggestion re: a diagonal block placement.

Hey gal,

You have sooo many comments and opinions that I thought I would add one more:

I'm guessing that the reason you like the look of the colors in your pencil roll is because you see them in a continuous line, from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Have you thought of doing the Color Wheel Quilt from the same book? You would get the same effect that way AND use up scraps from your stash that you already have.

I know that whatever you end up with, it will look fabulous!!!

XOXO

I vote for vertical, and have to say like other ladies that the white square was throwing me off :)
how fun- I have a ton of scraps that should go to something like this!

i'm liking random but with the white square in the middle so it doesn't get lost. it's going to be beautiful whatever you decide!
