Rules

Rule number one:

Check the local recycling barn every Saturday because you never know when you are going to find a perfect chandelier for your hallway.

Rule Number two:

Check your favorite Flea Market once a month because you never know when you are going to find the perfect map for your son's room. This is old and yellow and I loved the patina. It is a map the coast line of Maine ( where we live) and has all the beaches we visit on it.

Oh, and it was only $18 and that included the perfect frame!

Rule Number 3:

If you look for something long enough you will find it.

I have been looking for a large mirror for Anna's room and I found it this weekend for $25. I did add the decoration to the top and painted it white.

Rule number 4:

Never underestimate the power of spray paint.

We have been wanting to change out the brass doorknobs in our home since we moved here six years ago. Instead of spending a few hundred dollars to do that I got some oil-rubbed bronze spray paint at home depot for a few bucks.

I primed them first, then painted two coats. My husband was shocked! He did not think it was going to turn out this great! We are excited with the results.

We have two doors downstairs and we did purchase new knobs for those because they get a lot more use. I think the spray paint will hold up for the doors upstairs because they get a lot less use.
Do you have any shopping, thrifting, decorating rules? I would love to hear them!

Even if it looks like it is for display only, ask if they will sell it. This works particularly well at yard sales and flea markets.

My number one rule? Check your site before I go shopping. I simply don't leave home without your great advice.

Oh - you are very good with rules!
My rule? If I see what I want, don't wait to think about it too long or it'll be gone.

Lucky you! One of my rules is "When in doubt, add trim!" WE use that a lot in our home decorating dilemmas! Congrats on all the great finds. I love the map in your son's room.

Love your style! That mirror is perfect in your girly's room. Please share whether you took your doors down to spray the hinges (or did you tape them off?). And i so need to follow your rules and stop by the flea market to see what's in!

Your amazing! Love the map. I've thought about spray painting our doorknobs too, but I'm just not convinced that it will holdup. Now that our house is "for sale" I guess it doesn't matter too much. :) I'll just save up for our next house.
My rule is usually "if in doubt, snatch it up! It will be gone tomorrow!" :)

My dad has that same map in his summer cottage in the woods. I have been lusting after it for years but never been allowed to move it to Philly. Small world!
